Why are caterpillars a pest control problem?
Certain species of caterpillars especially the ‘box tree’ caterpillar eat the leaves of shrubs and bushes in and around garden areas.
Box tree caterpillars are named after what they eat most, ‘Box Trees’. Box Trees are a popular choice in home gardens, public parks and historic landscapes.
Box trees or sometimes called ‘Box Hedges’ are notoriously hardy, this was until the introduction of the ‘Box Heage Caterpillar’.
Box tree moths, which are the post-larvae form of the caterpillar will once hatched fly off to any neighbouring Box Trees and lay their eggs under their leaves. When the eggs hatch young caterpillars will begin feeding on the leaves, pupating, becoming moths and repeating the process.
This life cycle happens multiple times in a year, and in a single life cycle all the green of box hedges can be completely consumed by an infestation of the box tree caterpillar.
Signs of Caterpillar Infestation
- Box trees and hedges damages, you will notice a rapid defoliation of these shrubs.
- Visible sightings of the caterpillars, distinguishable by their black heads and stripes, approx. 3cm long.
- Under leaves of box trees/hedges there will be clusters of yellow eggs.
- Silk webbing on leaves and branches.
- White or brown winged moths.
Where did they come from?
A native species of East-Asia, were introduced by modern travel and goods shipping are able to thrive in the UK as they have no natural predator. It is down to professional pest controllers to track and treat infestations as they move around the country.
What does Box Tree Caterpillar pest control consist of?
We use a specialist treatment that consists of a total fumigation/ spray of all infected Box Trees, all box trees and hedges must be totally covered in the specialist professional-use organic chemicals. It is important to treat all the box trees in your property as they could re-infest treated areas once the treatment has worn off.
