Some Facts About Ladybirds
Ladybirds are beetles and have characteristics that differentiate them from other insect orders such as their hard fore-wings and biting mandibles. They are are usually 1-10mm in length and are round in shape. Their fore-wings (elytra) are brightly coloured and patterned.
The Harlequin species arrived in the South East of England around 2004 and has been spreading northward ever since. As its name suggests, it originated from the Asian continent and has been spreading successfully across the globe. Although it was only introduced to the USA in 1988 it is now the most common of its type on the American continent.
- A new species in the UK
- Widely recognised as one of the most invasive species on the planet

How do I know if I have a ladybird infestation?
The Harlequin Ladybird has a varied appearance, which makes it difficult to separate from other native ladybird species. Yet there are clues to look out for. The Harlequin usually has a high number of spots on its elytra, between 15-21. The patterns may take the appearance of a grid formation and its size is approximately 7-8mm in length.
The Harlequin has been known to invade houses in the thousands. In fact they have been known to collect in buildings in the tens of thousands, especially during autumn and winter. When there is a lack of other foods Harlequins have a tendency to bite humans, leaving a small mark or swelling. Some people may even have an allergic reaction to a bite.
